Do you choose to be happy?

When you realize there is nothing lacking,
the whole world belongs to you.

Verse 44 from the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu

Dr Wayne Dyer talks about how everything we need to be happy exists inside of us in every moment. He goes on to explain that when you let go of the belief that what you need to be happy exists outside of yourself, each moment becomes a choice about whether to be happy or not. You get to choose whether you want to be happy or not. This is true of any emotion you want to experience – peace, joy, love contentment, serenity. When you realize that there is nothing lacking in your life it means every moment is a choice about what you want to experience or not. The question is do you want to step into that choice or not? Do you want to become fully and completely responsible for whatever emotion you are feeling? Think about how empowering it will be to choose whether or not you want to be happy, joyful, energized (OK. That’s a biggie for me!) or peaceful. That also means you can choose to not be angry, revengeful, hateful or sad.

That’s fine in theory, you say, but I’m in… (insert whatever situation that you feel at the moment prevents you from being happy). I’m in an abusive relationship. I have no money, no job, or no place to live. I’m in constant pain. I lost my husband, wife, parent or sibling. All of these things are preventing me from being how I want to be. As long as outside circumstances dictate how you will be then you must have everything be aligned in prefect order to be happy. Everything is then outside of your control. Of course with everything outside you will always have a reason to not do what you say you are going to do. You will always have a reason to be miserable. You may not want to take responsibility for your feelings. That way you don’t have to change. It is just easier to be miserable than choose to be happy. You can choose to be happy even with the outside circumstances staying the same.

Let’s think of your choice to be happy as a river and the circumstances in your life as rocks and sticks and damns to the flow of happiness. Water is relentless. It doesn’t stop. It doesn’t quit. It always finds the weakness and exposes it. Your constant choice to be happy is the water constantly flowing against the rock and sticks that block that flow. The choice, the water, will eventually cause the circumstances to change, just like the constant flow of a river against a rock you wear it down and change it’s shape. As you choose each moment to feeling differently than the supposed circumstances dictate, you are changing the situation. If you are constantly happy, the situation and circumstances around you cannot help but change and transform to your flow. Be water. Be relentless in your choices. Be the change you want to see in those around you.

  1. A great reminder about choices. Tks

    • A great reminder for me! One of the reason I keep posting the articles! Nice to “hear” from you James.
